What or who is an angel?
To me, an angel is a very beautiful person who is God’s chosen messenger; someone who does not hesitate to show kindness; someone who never fails to bring a smile across your face; someone who gives you the most precious gifts and brightens up your day; someone who is always there for you to turn to in times of need; and, most importantly, someone who has left a special mark in your heart that you will never be able to forget.

I dare say that I have seen an angel who has done all these and even more that is beyond description.

Aunt Cindy was my Uncle Steven’s wife. She looked like any other ordinary Chinese woman but one with an extraordinary heart. She was a person nobody expected would one day touch the lives of an Indian family.

Yes, although she was the only Chinese in our family, she neither complained nor felt that she was the odd one out. Instead she soon became a part of our family.

Aunt Cindy’s presence was usually made known by her thunderous laughter, which was so infectious that one could not resist flashing at least a grin when she was around. At that time, I did not know that beneath the laughter were hidden sorrows which she did not express, all because she wanted us to be happy.

During festive seasons, especially on Christmas Eve, she would prepare for us Chinese delicacies for dinner. I would eat to my heart’s content but would never thank her or even appreciate her for having bought the groceries and later gone through so much hard work to cook for us.

The Christmas tress would be incomplete without neatly wrapped presents with labels containing our names followed by the words “With love, Steven and Cindy”.

I would often just unwrap the presents and later chuck them in a corner of my wardrobe. I never realized or even bothered to think of how tedious it must have been to buy presents for every individual in such a big family.

I was extremely blessed to have an aunt like her, but like almost everyone else, I had only been seeking God and asking Him for blessings that were materialistic.

I had failed to realize that the greatest present God had given me was an angel in the form of my aunt. Alas, it was too late to thank her or even tell her that I loved her.

To be continued…
