Definitely NOT a Plastic Bag…

Remember the hype of ‘I’m not a Plastic Bag!’? Well, we had the chance to be part of it. And if you think it’s just a hype and nothing else, read on.
It all started with a screening of An Inconvenient Truth. There was such an overwhelming response for this screening being held at the Imagination Room of National Library Building. We were made aware of Al Gore’s tireless efforts to combat environmental issues such as global warming. After all the education, we were very eager to start on our own ‘plastic bag’. While having some light refreshments at the workshop venue at Central Lending Library, we had a short informal discussion session with our peers and thought through our messages and designs we wanted to work on.

Our trainer, Ms Angelina Christian from PaintWorks at Kairos brought in awesome samples of painted T-shirts. She even came in her own salvaged pair of jeans she painted on! Angie then demonstrated some techniques to us so we had an idea how we could paint our bags. Angie brought in paint in earthly colours to coincide with the theme.
We immediately got down to work after getting our bags using masking tapes, Pebeo fabric paint, tube paint and paintbrushes.

We had to do some minutes of blowing with the hairdryers to let the paint dry fast so we could start on our second layer of paint. We were just so engrossed in producing our own unique bags!

‘Nuff said. Let’s have the rest of the pictures do the talking now, shall we?

I think it is a very interesting activity to get the message across to the youth. Not only did they learn the need for conservation, but they also had something useful to take home as well.

Hi Betty,
You’re right, it was a great activity to put across the conservation message in an interesting manner.
Let us know if you have any ideas for similar programmes that we could hold
