Here’s what you have to do:

* Pick your book

* Tell us, in English, WHAT the book is about and WHY others should read it

* Submit in video, audio or powerpoint slide show (duration should not exceed 2 minutes)  

Instructions for submission of entries

1) Start your book promotion with “What I’d like the World to Read! For The September Project”

2) Introduce the selected book by highlighting the following book details in the multimedia clips & description field:

* Title

* Author

* Library call number (check NLB online catalogue and include it if applicable)

* Short plot summary of the book

* Share why the world should read this book

3) Submit your entries to ShowTeens@nlb.gov.sg with the subject heading “What I’d like the world to read! For TSP” and the following information:

* URLs to your works (uploaded onto the internet)

* Your first name and the country you’re from

For the uninitiated, Dino is the library ambassador for NLB’s ‘I Love My Library’ campaign!

Held at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, the SHINE Youth Mascot Parade was the first event of its kind to be held in Asia. Dino joined dozens of other mascots and cos-players from gaming franchises, cultural institutions and other organizations at the exciting street parade in the heart of Orchard Road.

Sporting a jaunty blue cap and an “I love my Library” t-shirt, Dino managed to stand out even amidst the sea of storm-troopers, Harry Potter look-alikes and superheroes that filled the plaza.

The cuddly yellow dinosaur was well-loved by young children, who could not resist shaking his large paws (claws?) and hugging his tummy. It provided an excellent chance to spread the word about NLB, and gave out a selection of flyers and bookmarks about library services.

The highlight of the day was Singapore’s first ever Orchard Street Mascot Parade March. Dino was proud to be part of the Record Breaking Challenge for the largest number of dressed up characters in one location! Launched by Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports Mr Teo Ser Luck, the Mascot Parade March took place from Wisma Atria to Ngee Ann City. The cheerful parade drew smiles from many passers-by and provided several wonderful photo opportunities!

Theme: “Singapo(RE)presents…”.

Aims: YSTTE aims to encourage the reflection and discussion of the Singapore Identity amongst youths in Singapore.

Organised by: A group of secondary three students from Nanyang Girls’ High School, and supported by Nexus (MINDEF) and National Education Branch (Ministry of Education).

Who can participate: Youths in the upper primary, secondary and post-secondary institutions are welcome to participate in “Your Singapore Through Their Eyes 2009″.

PRIZES: Winners stand to win attractive cash prizes of up to $400 and will have their narratives published in a book anthology.

Deadline: 30 Jun 09.

READ!Sinagpore 2009 was launched on 22nd May 2009!

2 students (above) from the Institute of Technical Education were at the launch and shared how an assignment turned into a new found joy of reading. They had to create an animation based on a book they were reading. Currently, they are in the midst of completing their assignment. Check out this space for more updates.

“Dreams and Choices” is the theme for this year’s READ!Singapore 2009.

Books such as “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck & “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd are just 2 of the novels included. They were both made into movies.

What you have to do:
1) Select a 300-500 word extract from an English fiction book with a thought-provoking point or an interesting idea.
2) In relation to the extract, come up with a thought-provoking question that will stimulate thought, conversation or discussion between you and your friends.
3) Recommend three books of a similar theme related to the question or the extract.
4) Put all these information together and design an A3-size poster to share with your friends.

Teens who attended the Teen Expressions Workshop discussed the topic of heroes and created their own mask.

The topic for discussion was: “Must a hero always be perfect?”

No, because heroes are human too.
