This excerpt is subtly touching, especially the part when he remembers everything about his colouring book. This shows how much the event means to him. My guess is that he felt that he wanted to forget everything by colouring in his colouring book.
I don't know if all people are like the protagonist, and actually I think different people would think differently about this. Personally, I think that the protagonist's reaction, that he wanted it to be both ways, is understandable. I would probably be angry with someone if he/she killed someone I loved. Also, I understand why he did not tell it to anyone. Sometimes, there are feelings and grief you put deep in your heart, especially from the loss of a loved one, and those feelings you never confide to anyone.
I also like the way the author put it(about how he wanted it to be two ways), as it also shows how he feels it is unfair that his father would die this way.
