To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.

WANT TO WIN $20 BOOK VOUCHERS? Here’s how

JOIN THE READ AND REAP MOVEMENT!

Share your favourite book extracts with us! $20 book vouchers will be given to the owners of the first 100 extracts selected and posted on our website. All you have to do is select a 300 - 500 word narrative extract from a book with a thought-provoking point or an interesting idea. Come up with a question you would like others to respond to regarding your extract and send it over to ReadandReap@nlb.gov.sg.

Some Guidelines:

  1. All submissions must have 3 components,
    1. Main extract,
    2. 3 recommended reads and
    3. A thought provoking question (or more)
  2. Extracts must be in English and be narrative in nature. While it need not come from a fiction book, it should tell a story of sorts and not read like an instruction manual.
  3. Submissions need to be approximately 300 – 500 words long though we reserve the right to truncate your extract to focus the point on what the passage is trying to say, if necessary.
  4. Keep questions open-ended so that discussions may be generated out of it. Yes or No questions simply will not do or if you have to have such a question, make sure there is a “why” after the first question.
  5. Remember that your audience may not have read the book so do choose an extract that has a self-contained point and can stand alone on its own.
  6. Do also remember that not everyone may be used to reading very literary texts so do choose something that is easily digestible.
  7. Some types of extracts that will not work:
    1. An extremely convoluted passage that is filled with long sentences, complex ideas and bombastic words.
    2. A book where the idea explored is dated, for example, a book on the French Revolution or another very specific point in history. While we will not say no to such an extract, we would advise against it, as the general public might not be familiar with it. However, if you want to use it as a platform to talk about larger issues like the effects of war, by all means, do submit it.
    3. A book that is of interest to a very specific group of people – niche books, like perhaps, a book on some obscure field in science unknown to many.
    4. A book that might offend public sensibilities. This is subjective but as a general rule, do not choose an extract that makes derogatory remarks against any religion or race.

Do remember to include the following details so that your entry can be processed smoothly:
i) your name
ii) NRIC/ Passport number
iii) Mailing Address (Singapore only)
iv) Contact number
v) your age

What are you waiting for? The harvest is ripe and ready for the picking!

About Read and Reap

Have you heard the phrase “reaping what you sow”?

It is a newly launched reading initiative by NLB that encourages the seeds of ideas to grow from reading a single literary extract from a book (of course we hope that you will pick up the book too) and from that, spark a whole new reading and sharing experience ..[more].
