In da news…

In addition to the news programmes on the telly yesterday, here are some other articles that have appeared.

Today: Link to main page, article on Page 4, July 26th 2007 (Direct Link: may not be available after 1 week)

Articles mainly reported that rentals in the Orchard Road area had gone up and the reason for the library’s closure was because the landlord did not wish to renew the lease. Those interviewed expressed that they would miss the library cos of its collections and convenience, and also bcos it was “a sanctuary amid the bustle of down-town Singapore”.

So, what’s gonna be here when we say farewell? According to Today, there’ll be “a new retail concept embracing fashion, beauty and wellness” (woohoo. :|). There were also some speculations on where the other library (other than the one at *scape) would be. Don’t worry, we’ll definitely let you know when we can, in the meanwhile, have fun guessing!

We’ll trawl the blogosphere and forums in our next post.
Stay tuned!

I am dismayed to hear that the Library@ Orchard is closing. While I may not be an avid library fan, I’ve spent time in this library and have fond memories of it. This was where I flipped through bridal magazines, searching for ideas for that perfect gown. It was also where I hunted down the newest travel guide in preparation for my road trip to Canada. At times when the crowds at Orchard just drive my nuts, this was the perfect hideout where I could get a bit of peace, at least for a while. It’s also the place I go to when my feet are tired from too much shopping, or when I needed a “time-filler” in between waiting for friends who are perpetually late for appointments. Since I’ve fallen out of the age group of people who are likely to visit the new library at *scape, I do hope that the other library would be in a location as good as the current one. But in any case, I will have to wait till 2009. That is, a long wait. :(

I’m sad to hear that my favourite library is closing! I have fond memories of this library. This library was my sole reason a few years back to make trips down to crowded Orchard Road which is often 1 hour journey. It’s so convenient and the my favourite books and magazines are all found here. It’s also the library that re-ignited my passion for reading fiction.
I hope the next location is just as convenient and it’s atmosphere and layout as cozy and relatively quiet.
