Hi anshuman,

We don't have any further details to share at the moment other than our previously released info: library@orchard is likely to return in 2013/2014 within the building formerly occupied by Specialists' Centre.

Hope this helps!

Hi Pat! Happy 2011!

I'll try to answer your queries as best I can (we're not able to release all the info regarding the 2 new libraries quite yet).

For SRPL, the floor space set aside for the library (approx 1,580 sqm) only comprises of the interior, ie the surrounding areas such as the terraces/playground etc are managed by nex. The facade of the library will be glass though. Currently the SkyPark (level 4R) is open to the public. Although the library is still a restricted area, you can still take a peep at the exterior if you visit Level 4R (or visit our facebook page for a online peep).

With respect to themes, only the library@esplanade is a niche library - it's collections and services specialise in the performing arts, meaning you won't find materials like travel guides or self-help books there. The Woodlands Regional Library on the other hand, is a large-sized public library which carries a broad range of collections (not limited to nature and eco topics). For the new libraries, we will release the information closer to their launch dates (March 2011 for SRPL and May 2011 for CMPL.

Finally, regarding seating, mall libraries as compared to their larger brethen, will definitely not have as many seats/seating areas.

As you've mentioned, we do need to try to define a balance between seating, collections, and our other programmes and services. The public libraries also cater to a broad range of age/user groups, meaning we need to manage a broad range of needs and expectations. For SRPL, we have considered the areas you've mentioned in our choices regarding seating, it's just that the numbers will never be equivalent to the amount of seating in Woodlands, for eg.

I hope I've been able to address your various queries, and we look forward to your continued support of our public libraries!

Will SRPL have an accompanying rooftop learning garden (or similar facilities) & full-length windows (along climate-appropriate facades) to capitalize on its top-of-the-world location ?

Also, although I could be mistaken, it occurred to me that other than the nature & environment-themed Woodlands Regional Library & perhaps library@esplanade, the other public libraries do not seem to have explicit (or explicitly publicized) themes. How about SRPL & Clementi PL?

Just a while ago, I came across patron feedback expressing that it would be good to have sofas/ proper chairs & tables in shopping mall libraries, so as to make them more comfortable to use. Although floorspace might be a constraint & some shelves may have to be sacrificed, I suppose an additional upside of installing proper furniture is that this would also benefit certain groups of patrons (eg. elderly citizens, those with joint/muscle issues), who might otherwise find it tiring or physically difficult to use backless benches or sit on the floor.

Happy 2011, & have fun in making SRPL the nex fun & accessible haven for all !
