Old Issues, New Issues : Impact of Digital Technology upon Contemporary and Historic Newspapers.
There will be 3 tracks of presentations that highlight a particular aspect or issue related to newspapers during the 2.5 day conference. These are:
1. Physical and Digital Preservation of Newspapers
Newspapers serve as a primary source for local history information, a useful resource for scholars and researchers. It is imperative that knowledge of standards, good practices and procedures is cultivated for the preservation of the newspapers as artefacts of intrinsic value, and more importantly for the intellectual content of the newspapers.
2. Service and Access Models of Southeast Asian Newspapers
Developing a viable service and access model goes a long way in ensuring that an important purveyor and conduit of heritage is valued and not forgotten. The presentations in this section shall look at initiatives and collaborations from the perspective of Southeast Asia on case studies of collections of Southeast Asian newspapers, held locally or overseas, as well as how developments in technology have brought a new lease of life and a wider audience to indigenous newspapers.
3. Online Newspapers
Online newspapers play an important role in the modern fast-paced society by feeding readers with instant news as they happen. The spontaneous updates, the dynamic medium, and the style of presentation pose challenges to the conventional ways of managing and preserving newspapers. This section shall explore the new issues surrounding online newspapers, while revisiting the on-going issues on managing and preserving online newspapers to meet long-term research needs.
