As part of READ! Singapore 2012, we are pleased to invite author Yong Shu Hoong to our book club who will talk about his short story “The Handover”.
Date: Friday, July 27, 2012
Time: 5:00 – 6:30 pm
Venue: The Activity Room, Bukit Batok Public Library
Facilitator: Mr Kweh Soon Huat, Librarian
About the author: Shu Hoong is the author of Isaac, Isaac Revisited, and Dowhile, and the co-ordinator for the monthly subTEXT readings at the Book Café.
About the story: The protagonist is a journalist who quits her job to look after her dying mother. Her mother is known to be the best cook in the neighbourhood, while she herself could only make instant noodles, fried rice, and omelettes. When her mother becomes too sick to get out of bed, she has to either scour Singapore to find her mother’s favourite hawker food or prepare home-cooked food for her. When the soup she prepares for her mother is found to be less than satisfactory, her mother thinks of a plan to teach her daughter to cook: she ‘interviews’ her mother about her recipes and writes them down in her notepad. All this culminates in the protagonist preparing a last reunion dinner with her mother’s recipes.
