Singapore’s first Foreign Minister S. Rajaratnam passed away on Wednesday, 22 Feb. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Mr Rajaratnam was one of Singapore’s founding fathers and was also responsible for the Singapore Pledge which manifested his belief that race should be secondary to nationality.

After I read “The Prophetic and the Political: Selected Speeches and Writings of S. Rajaratnam”, I was left with a profound sense of how far-sighted he was. I mean, back in the 1970s, before anyone had any idea what was “globalisation”, he was already talking about making Singapore “a global city” where we are linked with other cities and economies. Prophetic indeed.

When I heard the news Mr Rajaratnam had passed away, I told a close friend, there goes another legend (to me, Mr Devan Nair who had passed away not too long ago, was another legend).

I never encountered nor worked or saw Mr Rajaratnam in person, but everytime I read something about him in the newspapers, I was very moved. Can’t put my finger on it, but it was perhaps when you read about him, you get this strong feeling that he will always be known for a personality that touched people and made you feel warm and welcome.
On the day of the funeral service, I decided to sit outside the Singapore Recreation Club – where Connaught Drive meets Stamford Road – and waited to watch the hearse go by. When the hearse turned into Stamford Road, making its way to the Esplanade, there was this brief silence in the surrounding streets and I struggled hard to keep the tears in.
I thought to myself, “Here goes a man who made an impact on many people and he’s on his way to another place somewhere.”

BTW, our colleagues at LKCRL have compiled a much more comprehensive list on works by and about S. Rajaratnam. I’ve posted the list at my personal blog page (way too long to be posted as a High Browse post). Credit for the list goes to Alex Ong from LKCRL.

    Poetic Legacy: S. Rajaratnam, 1915-2006

No, I’ve not written a poem. I was thinking about the Singapore Pledge.
It is with his passing that many have subsequently realised S. Rajaratnam was the one who penned it. Some have recited this for 12 years in their early school years and not k…

Librarians? Can you e-mail me a summary about Mr. S. Rajaratnam? I know it’s quite tiring, but I need it for a project. I will be deeply gratified if you do. Thanks.
