HAPPENIN’ . programmes + events

About two weeks ago, I popped by the office of my colleague, Faridah (Senior Librarian). She was holding a self-made poster (see above picture) so I asked, “What’s that for?”
Turned out Faridah volunteered to conduct a few book discussion sessions on Tuesdays With Morrie and put together some newspaper clippings as a discussion aid. We talked about the book and at one point she said, “Life is a celebration”. She was sporting enough to let me shoot a video and repeated that phrase (you can hear her voice about 10 secs into the clip).
Mustering whatever video-editing skills I had (which isn’t much, btw) I’ve put together this very short clip (my colleagues at Digital Library Services helped to convert to these versions):
>Windows Media Player WMV file (2.26MB)
>QuickTime MOV file (2.17MB)
>MP4 file (2.03MB)
As to why she chose those pictures for a discussion on Tuesdays With Morrie, Faridah’s explanation as follows:
The clippings were from The Straits Times between April and May 2006. At the top left was an article about a woman with breast cancer. Directly below showed people obtaining their early SRS payouts, and below was a footballer who scored a goal. In the centre was a feature article about a young girl suffering from a terminal illness. Finally on the extreme right was the late CEO of KPMG who passed away also from a terminal disease.
The point was that “whatever the occassions, experiences, nationalities … they all have one common message — that Life is a Celebration”.
Incidentally, I participated in yesterday’s online book chat (transcript would be up soon), and one participant said she didn’t like the book because it was about Death. I would think Tuesdays With Morrie was more about life, and the art of living well. So I agree with Faridah — Life is a Celebration, and that’s what Tuesdays With Morrie means to me.
Faridah would be facilitating a few more discussion sessions on Tuesdays With Morrie and would be more than happy to have your participation. Trust me, she’s a good facilitator (besides, there’s free food and drinks):
- Fridays 23 June and 28 July
- Central Lending Library (CLL) Multipurpose Room
- 6.30pm to 7.30pm
