Heartlands Book Club Discussion - July 2008

July 16th, 2008 by Isaak Kwok · 377 Views · 8 Comments

HAPPENIN’ . programmes + events

This July discussion is a run-up to the National Day’s celebration around the corner. The books selected - Tangerine by Colin Cheong and Heartland by Daren Shiau deal with issues such as national identity, personal bonding, the heartlands and friendship across national boundaries and cultures.

The details:
Date/Time: 4.00pm, Friday 25 July
Venue: The Activity Room, Bukit Batok Community Library
Facilitator: Mr Paul Fitzpatrick
Books: “Tangerine” by Colin Cheong (Call No.: SING English CHE) and “Heartland” by Daren Shiau (Call No.: SING English SHI or here)

What are the books about:
1) “Heartlands”: It examines the sense of belonging of post-war Singaporean, the living experiences in the ubiquitous public housing and making sense of what we want. It is a story about ordinary Singaporeans.
2) “Tangerine”: In the author’s own words, “The central theme of the book is isolation/connection. Nick goes on the trip to re-connect with his friends and thru his journey relearns how to connect again with a larger group - just people in general. He learns again to empathise and feel for and with people, signified in that last scene. The larger things in life we might not be able to do anything about, but that one relationship with anybody at any moment in time is in truth all you do have because what is past is gone and what is to come is not true yet.”

I mean ‘The Outsider’ - not ‘The Trial’ - “The Trial’ was by Kafka. Paul

Good idea Psul … Colin Cheong will definitely be one of the authors coming in future … I have already touched base with him and he is only too happy to come provided his personal schedules permit (he is teaching) :)

Colin also wrote “Poets, Priests and Prostitutes’ - the three ‘P’s, perhaps we can do that book? Paul
