WHO’S READING WHAT . reader’s recommendations
[HBeditor: Our colleague, Eugene Anthony, is a librarian at library@esplanade. Being a voracious devourer of periodicals, he shares some of his favs below. Without further ado: Presenting Eugene! (*applause*)]
Presented with so many magazines and journals that I want to read and shuffle them with books, what do I do? After much elimination and re-reads, these are what I have settled for and would encourage you to take a peek at. Do turn more than just a page or two of these worthy (at least I reckon!) publications:

New York : A. W. Ellsworth
Call No.: 028.105 NYRB

New York Review of Books
Last week when I stepped up to the counter at Borders with this tabloid-sized publication, the staff who attended to me went, “$13.80 for a newspaper?”. To which I replied, “This is no ordinary run-of-the-mill paper. It’s more than just ‘book reviews’ as it covers themes and topics around selected books, from art, history, geopolitics, environment, nature, arts… Whatever that can be discussed at length.” I also added, “$13.80 for a fortnightly publication with such content is considered cheap!” If you ever need to read one periodical in the world, this would be it. It’s the most intelligent read on this planet and after finishing an article or piece, you’ll feel like you’ve read the whole book itself.

Cambridge, England : Granta Publications
Call No.: 820 G

Granta Magazine
A brilliant quarterly, each with a theme. Includes reportage, photo essays and writing that is hard to beat. I love this!

Le Monde Diplomatique (english edition)
The monthly notable French paper translated into English. A great paper with quality analysis, it gives you views from the perspective of the French left.

Hi WL,
first, the French left is a term used for those with a socialist/marxist leaning or point of view. If you read some of the Le Monde articles online, you would find that the content looks at the plight of lesser developed nations, ex-colonies of France and with a lot of footnotes and references thrown in. Not many papers do this and that’s what makes every issue of Le Monde exciting.
Go ahead and just read it and you will know my drift.
Hope I have answered your question.
Thanks for reading!

$13.80 for a newspaper! I’d say the publishers are the intelligent ones. Heck, you can read High Browse Online for free! [I'm kidding!]
