By now, many of you would have read or heard about the assassination of Pakistan’s leading opposition figure and twice former Prime Minister of that country, Benazir Bhutto.
She was 54 years old.
She was born into a wealthy land-owning family that was also actively involved in national politics, and later completed her education at Oxford and Harvard. In Oxford, she became the first Asian woman to be voted as president of the Oxford Union, the prestigious debating society.
The family’s involvement in politics has been marked by violence and tragedy. Her father, Zulfakir Ali Bhutto, was himself Prime Minister from 1971 to 1977, before he was deposed and later hanged on charges of conspiracy to murder. Her two brothers also died under violent and mysterious circumstances.
Readers who would like to read more about her can visit BBC’s Channel 4 News or this NY Times article (registration required).

[Looks as if I’ve having a conversation by myself, heh…] UPDATE: I was alerted to this blog post by Marina Mathathir (daughter of the ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mathathir Mohamed), who’s met Benazir Bhutto and family. It’s a thoughtful post, that offers perhaps a different perspective to the late Benazir Bhutto.
