For June’s session of Seniors’ Reading Club at Central Public Library, we’ll be discussing the Read!Singapore title ‘The Help’ (Call No.: English STO) by Kathryn Stockett.

About the book: Limited and persecuted by racial divides in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, three women, including an African-American maid, her sassy and chronically unemployed friend, and a recently graduated white woman, team up for a clandestine project. (From Ebscohost Novelist)

Background: The Help by Kathryn Stockett was published in 2009 and adapted into an Oscar-winning movie in 2011. The book was longlisted for the Orange Prize in Fiction in 2010, and won several awards such as the SIBA Book Award and Townsend Prize for Fiction. The book made the NYT bestseller list in 2009 and 2011.
