A regional genre originating from Taiwan and flourished in Fujian, Hokkien Opera was once a popular opera form in Southeast Asia with a colourful history that was shaped by the local community.
In its short history of around 100 years, it moved from the stage to film studio and television screen.
This talk by Dr Chua Soo Pong, Director of Chinese Opera Institute, Singapore, will discuss the different phases of development of the genre in China, Taiwan and Singapore with a highlight on Ming Hwa Yuan Taiwanese Opera Troupe.
