Staff Profile: Thong Yang
Librarian, library@esplanade, Adult & Young People’s Services
Thong Yang enjoys music. He prefers music in its purest form and feels that good music should stir emotions.
His encounter with music started late at age 13 when he first learned the harmonica. A year later, he went on to pick up the Chinese bamboo flute. He fell in love with the instrument and began studying it seriously.
However, due to other commitments, he chose to sort of “retire into seclusion” soon after winning the 1st prize in the National Music Competition in 1993. Since then, he only performs on the Chinese flute upon request.
About 5 years back, he found affection for the nylon string guitar and ever since, has been trying very hard to master the instrument. He now spends most of his personal time pumping nylon on the fretboard and competing with Barney for his daughter’s attention.
