Esplanade’s Baybeats 2013 (28 to 30 June)

Baybeats, Esplanade’s alternative music festival featuring Asian bands, is back again for the 12th year from 28-30 June (Fri-Sun). Launched in 2002, the festival features performing genres such as folk, pop, metal, post-rock, emo and punk; and less-known alternative genres including grindcore, progressive metalcore, dreampop and acoustic blue grass.

Over the three-day festival, Baybeats 2013 will present 35 bands (21 acts from Singapore and 14 from Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia) performing a grand total of 54 non-ticketed shows. Thirty bands will be playing in Baybeats for the

Singapore Dance Theatre Ballet Costumes Exhibition

The Singapore Dance Theatre is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year!

To tie in with the company’s anniversary and World Book Day on 23 April 2013, library@esplanade presents Singapore Dance Theatre Ballet Costumes Exhibition as part of our “Celebrating Cervantes & Shakespeare” theme of displays from now to 31 May 2013. A tribute to Christina Sergeant, local theatre director, actress and educator

Christina Sergeant (1955-2013) was a versatile theatre actress and director, and a beloved teacher. She was born in Massachusetts in the United States and graduated with a degree in Drama from the University of Houston, and studied mime for two years at the Ecole Internationale de Mimodrame Marcel Marceau. She met her Singaporean husband, Mr. B.K. Tan in Houston, Texas and moved to Singapore together with him in 1983.

After arriving in Singapore, she quickly gained footing in the local theatre scene. She co-founded the Actors Theatre Circle with theatre guru Shirley Smith from 1989-1995 and served as an artistic director
