ASK! Editors revealed!

This is the post where we bare… our souls to our gentle readers. Mei Jun, Soon Huat, Yen Yen, Yasmin Asslan and Justin are librarians working in Adult & Young People’s Services, whilst Elizabeth, Galvin, Adeline and Felicia are with Children’s Services. Happy reading!
- The ASK! Webblog Team for 2008

Ang Mei Jun
Horoscope: Pieces (I do not believe that astrology predictions are 100% accurate, and its never advisable to base one’s actions purely on them. But its fun how they some times reflect real life.)
Personality: Prone to mood swings…
Other stuff: Hmmm…I like appreciate simple things in life, and I think its the simplicity of it that brings out happiness in people.
Books I like: Books about children, mostly real-life”

Toh Yen Yen
The first important project that Yen Yen was tasked with since joining NLB was to be one of the editors for ASK! Blog. It was scary as she is utterly clueless about HTML, (to those who are as in the dark as she is, that’s hypertext markup language!)
In her spare time, Yen Yen likes to catch foreign language films, and prowls for divine dessert places. She firmly believes that dessert is a course that is not to be missed during meal times! She counts books by Oliver Sacks, Haruki Murakami, and Milan Kundera as some of her favourite reads.

Justin Tan
“What?? You are actually a Librarian??” as my friends would always say and look at me with eyes that nearly popped out in disbelief. Perhaps I do not look like a typical Librarian to them…Or perhaps I have that kind of typical “ah-beng” (singapore slang for gangster) look. In any case, I would always answer with my heads up and a resounding “Yes lah, I am…” I am proud of my profession and I am sure any fellow colleagues in the Librarianship fraternity would concur with me also. Keen to know what we Librarians do then? Well, send an email to ASK! Service at ASK! and we’ll tell you all about it…

 soonhuat-mugshot.jpg

hi, I am a road warrior. I drive a dfferent kind of wheels - my motorised wheelchair which I dubbed “my ferrari”. It has given me a new-found freedom and a sense of adventure. I have been to the new T3 airport about a dozen times already! While travelling around in our superb MRT system, I like to photojournal observations of ordinary lives here.Hope to post these to my blog one day

Yasmin Muhammad Asslan
The resident ‘librarian interviewer’ is back from her vacation in Beijing and is ready to take on 2008 by questioning her colleagues about their job. During her free time, she likes to watch aeroplanes, rollerblade, cook, play Final Fantasy III, watch epic movies and cartoons and surf the Internet for er, more information to help her library patrons. Yasmin says, “The very moment I saw a bespectacled lady stamp my library book, I knew I wanted to become a librarian, and I made it my life’s calling to dispel that stereotypical image. Through this website, I have found meaning to my existence. Thank you, ASK blog!”. Her bookshelves are gems fought for and grabbed during book sales at the Singapore Expo. “I’m a children’s librarian, okay. I read children’s books like Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh and books by Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton – and books for adults like ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’ and ‘The Kite Runner’. Yasmin hopes that readers would e-mail or call ASK! with their interesting enquiries. “After all, that’s what an interviewer does, right? ASK – get it?”

Liz_ASK_Pic.JPG
Elizabeth Lee
Usually located at bookstores, libraries, music stores and photography-related gatherings, Elizabeth lives by the mantra “No books, no music, no photography, no life”. Her reading list can reach the scale of a mountain’s height and an ecstatic girl she will be. To make her day, she reads authors like Paulo Coelho, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Audrey Niffenegger. While not busy bobbing her head to the sounds of Saint Etienne, Kings of Convenience or Lisa Ekdahl, Elizabeth can be found at various nooks and crannies around Singapore, busy snapping away with her trusty digicam, which she hopes to upgrade to a Canon 400D soon (any kind-hearted philanthropies listening out there?), or her vintage lomo camera.

Felicia_ASK_Pic2.jpg
Felicia Chan
Felicia remembers being interviewed once before for this blog (see entry)… Now she is an editor. Felicia’s dream is to see the world physically, to trek through the alleys of civilization, past and present, to ogle at exhibits countries have seized to demonstrate their cultural superiority, to breathe the little fresh air that exist in pockets around the world BUT she does not have the finances to support such a dream. Next best alternative? Be a librarian. She currently spends her time traveling through books, drooling at pictures of exotic places and surfing through the net to dig out answers for curious minds. Want to know more? ASK!

Galvin
Galvin Soh
Galvin is very much a child at heart, which is just as well since he is a Children’s Services Librarian. He considers having a deprived childhood the reason he is overcompensating now by watching 80s cartoons, collecting Transformers toys and overindulging in computer games. Galvin wanted to be a high-class waiter when he was young, so he could fly all over the world. But now he is happy to fly from one library to the next, opening new worlds to children via his storytelling sessions. In his free time, Galvin enjoys going to the theatre and the symphony. He counts Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov among his favorite composers and dreams of receiving his own standing ovation one day…

 adeline.jpg
Adeline Tan
Guinea pigs, shopping and good food are some of the things which Adeline talks about all the time. She spends most of her free time with her family and her beloved pet -a guinea pig of course! Adeline enjoys reading information books on guinea pigs and stories written by her favourite authors - Roald Dahl, William Sleator, C.S. Lewis and many more.

No question is too weird. Go ahead and ASK! - ask@nlb.gov.sg
